ACL Essex wins big for sustainable construction programme Retrofit

ACL Essex, part of Essex County Council (ECC), has won an award for their innovative retrofit training programme at the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning & Transport (ADEPT)’s annual President’s Awards.

The ceremony took place at ADEPT’s Spring Conference and the adult education provider walked away with the Delivering Clean Growth Award, sponsored by Jacobs, for facilitating the retrofit programme as part of the Harlow and Tendring Retrofit Pipeline for Economic Renewal.

Funded by the UK Community Renewal Fund, the scheme delivered a targeted programme across social housing, skills and employment, business and training, all contributing to the local delivery of retrofit. Judges praised the programme for being ‘a bit out of the ordinary and a very specific and tailored approach to a real-world problem.’

ACL Essex began their partnership with the Retrofit Academy last year, aligning with the academy’s mission to train 200,000 competent retrofitters by 2030. Retrofitting is the process of upgrading existing homes to make them more energy efficient, with the aim of eradicating fuel poverty, contributing towards sustainability and improving people’s lives, homes and local community.

By delivering Level 2-5 qualifications in retrofitting, ACL Essex is offering residents, particularly those who already work in the construction industry, the chance to increase their knowledge on sustainability and improve the energy efficiency of homes.

We are very thankful for the recognition we’ve received from the voluntary organisation ADEPT. Developing sustainable futures is core to our work, and we will continue to provide and promote new sustainable and environmentally friendly programmes that improve the lives of those living in Essex.

ADEPT’s primary role is to take the lead in transforming local authorities and its annual award ceremony is a celebration of innovation for local places.
